Objectives

  • Assess your extraneous cognitive load
  • Learn about cognitive load
  • Learn how to reduce your extraneous cognitive load so you can focus on teaching

Highlights

  • Cognitive load refers to the amount of working memory resources we are using.
  • Working memory, unlike long-term memory, is limited and easily overwhelmed.
  • If our cognitive load is too high, it hampers the transfer of new schema from working memory to long-term memory (it causes us to earn less effectively).
  • Teaching outside of the classroom requires us to learn a new skill – we need our working memory to be free and focused on the task!
  • Reduce strain on working memory by following a model FSA or accompanying someone who is experienced, delegating tasks to students and allies,  and going somewhere you already know.
