Learn how to reduce your extraneous cognitive load so you can focus on teaching
Highlights
Cognitive load refers to the amount of working memory resources we are using.
Working memory, unlike long-term memory, is limited and easily overwhelmed.
If our cognitive load is too high, it hampers the transfer of new schema from working memory to long-term memory (it causes us to earn less effectively).
Teaching outside of the classroom requires us to learn a new skill – we need our working memory to be free and focused on the task!
Reduce strain on working memory by following a model FSA or accompanying someone who is experienced, delegating tasks to students and allies, and going somewhere you already know.
