Step #3:
Interviews
The last item on the application form asks students when they are available for interviews. Ideally, you will conduct interviews in groups. Working in small teams, have them draft a sample behavioural contract. A positive behavioural contract is the first step in building a community of inquiry, since it establishes intentionality within the group. It also sets clear expectations about when to use the target language and what to do if someone isn’t speaking it. Through the exercise of drawing up a contract in groups, you will learn about the students’ values and their motivations for signing up for the trip and will get first-hand insight into their ability to work as a team member.
