Setting objectives for study abroad

Most language teachers have two types of learning objectives for their FSA. Measurable objectives are related to specific outcomes in language, skills, and intercultural learning. Learning process objectives, on the other hand, are related to experiences and/or feelings about being in a foreign country.

Teacher participants in our research study used measurable objectives to justify their study abroad programs to administrators, funding agencies, and other stakeholders, but they also spoke of learning process objectives as their primary motivation for taking students on study abroad (Fischer & Viens, 2023).

After reading this section, you will be able to define measurable objectives and learning process objectives for your short-term language study abroad program and begin preparing pedagogical activities to help students achieve these objectives.
