Assessing and evaluating students during study abroad

So far, you have learned about the three areas of measurable outcomes to consider in FSA: language, culture, and skills. The issue now is how to go about measuring them. This may seem to be a straightforward question, but it can be difficult to design evaluations that accurately test these competencies. So let’s examine each one in turn, carefully considering the challenges they present.

Why assessment and evaluation matter

  • Knowing how you want to measure outcomes is just as important as knowing what to measure.
  • Making choices about assessment and evaluation early on allows you to conduct pre- and post-departure testing to better measure learning.
